History of Arya Samaj South Africa
The Vedic Philosophy expounded by the dynamic social and religious reformer, Swami Dayanand Saraswati of India made tremendous impact on the early settlers in this country. It was clearly evident that many of these Indian settlers possessed the firm fibre that would help foster a religious and social reform. This facilitated the work of the swamis and pracharaks who expounded the principles of Vedic Philosophy.
We owe a debt of gratitude to the early pioneers of the Arya Samaj who were largely responsible for kindling in the Indian an awareness of the miserable conditions of their indenture. The Arya Samaj was born out of the need for social and religious reform in Hindu Dharma. Since the indentured labourer came from the lower socio-economic rungs and was the victim of exploitation it is easy to see why the Arya Samaj had a great appeal to the Indian South African. Thus, through the meritorious work they undertook, the pioneer pracharaks left and indelible impression on this community and paved the way for the future growth of the Arya Samaj in South Africa.
